Swimming’s Biggest Name is Back in the Pool

Some of the most popular Olympic events occur in the pool, and that means those who suit up for the red, white and blue are often turn into household names. In the late 60’s and 70’s it was Mark Spitz who took home 11 medals, including 9 gold. Jenny Thompson enthralled the nation during the 90’s with 8 of her 12 Olympic medals emblazoned with gold. However, one person remains perched well above the rest in terms of Olympic domination and lucky for us, he may not be done yet. Michael Phelps, the man with 22 Olympic medals including 18 gold, recently returned to the pool after a hiatus following the 2012 Olympics in London.

Rumors began circulating that Phelps may be eyeing a return to the sport after he was reinstated by the drug testing program which oversees American Olympians last November. Despite not being active in professional swimming, Phelps passed two drug tests between July 1 and September 30 according to his coach, Bob Bowman. Should the 28 year old return to his dominant self, it could catapult him into further stardom. The challenge won’t be easy however, as a nearly two year break gave other competitors time to shine. Fellow American Ryan Lochte is widely considered one of the top talents in the world and he even bested Phelps at an event in Arizona this past April. Still, since the margin of victory was only two-tenths of a second, don’t think for a second Phelps will be deterred by setback. If anything, losing to his friend and rival Lochte may help inspire Phelps to get back to his Olympic form.
