Just as you thought it was safe to enjoy summer again, another danger is rearing its ugly head — and has been for months. Many experts are calling it “Pool-mageddon.”

A chlorine shortage is to be expected in 2021. This is due to a chemical fire that was caused by Hurricane Laura in August 2020. That fire destroyed one of the country’s largest chlorine plants, reducing the overall chlorine supply this year. But fear not! There are a number of ways to save your summer without breaking the bank. Keep reading to understand why this shortage is so important, and what you can do to keep your home’s swimming pool clean while staying within your budget.

What’s the big deal?

This chemical plant specifically made Trichlor, a very popular chlorine option in the form of tablets. The fire also destroyed some granular chlorine supply. While there should be a stock of Trichlor available this summer, supply will be extremely limited compared to years past.

Because of this shortage, the price of Trichlor chlorine tablets has nearly doubled, and is only expected to rise throughout the summer as supplies continue to dwindle.

What does this mean for my pool?

Lots of people, possibly including yourself, prefer Trichlor tablets. That’s because they’re easy to dispense, and therefore safer for many who like to clean their own pool in between service visits. And if you’re one of those people, you might shell out significantly more chunks of change more this season.

What can I do about it?

The good news is that you have a few other options to disinfect your swimming pool that don’t involve chlorine tablets.

You could use a liquid chlorine solution, but that’s probably not your preference if you’re already using tablets. That probably defeats the intent of minimal chemical handling. Additionally, with the demand increasing for liquid chlorine, the price for that method will likely increase, too.

Instead, we’d like to offer an alternative that we think you’re going to like — possibly even more than chlorine tablets!

Salt Chlorine — A Smarter Solution

IntelliChlor® Salt Chlorine Generator

We’re really big fans of salt chlorine generation, and for good reason! Not only does salt chlorine sanitize your pool safely and effectively, but it has a lot of other great qualities that make for an incredibly great swim:

  • Save up to 60% on projected chlorine costs this summer
  • Softer water that’s easier on the eyes, hair, and skin
  • Eliminates harmful chemicals and additives traditionally found in other chlorine forms
  • Less damaging to swimsuit fabrics
  • More consistent chemistry
  • Cleans your pool just as effectively as liquid chlorine or tablets

Does salt chlorine actually work?

Yes! The science behind salt chlorination is a little complicated, but here’s the short story. Since salt is made of equal parts sodium and chlorine, a salt chlorine generator uses a direct electrical current to separate the sodium and the chlorine. The chlorine dissolves in your pool water to form hypochlorous acid, a weak acid that safely and effectively cleans your pool with less chemical impact on your body than liquid chlorine.

How can I use salt chlorine in my pool?

We’re big fans of salt chlorine, we stock and service salt systems ad would be happy to discuss with you. As the price of Trichlor is set to increase, we expect the price of liquid chlorine to also increase. Once this happens, it’s very likely that these chlorine options will become more expensive than salt chlorine.
