What Causes Foam and How to Prevent it?
There are a few different reasons why your swimming pool water can get a little foamy:
1. Low-Quality Algaecides
If you have recently added an algaecide to your pool water, you may want to reconsider the brand you used or take a look at what’s inside the product. If you see copper or another metallic material on the bottle, that may be your problem right there. Our experts always recommend using high-quality products, as they are much more likely to keep your water clean and pool running smoothly.
2. Imbalanced Pool Water
The quality of your pool water may be the cause of your foamy problem. Always ensure that your pool water is properly balanced and cleaned regularly with quality pool cleaners and pool supplies. Test your water regularly and pay close attention to calcium hardness levels.
3. Clogged with Contaminants
Quick question, have you had swimmers in your pool lately? If you’ve recently had a pool party or even a few friends over for a swim, that may be why your pool water is foamy. As a general rule of thumb, bathers should always shower or rinse off before entering the pool. This can help to reduce or eliminate contaminants that can mix with the chemicals in your pool and even clog the filtration system. These contaminants can include body oils, shampoo, lotion, detergents, dirt, and other debris.
How to Eliminate Foam
If your pool water has foam on the surface, you have two choices to get rid of it:
1. Treat the water yourself with high-quality pool supplies
2. Hire a pool cleaning company to perform a pool cleaning service
If you’re more of a “do-it-yourself” kind of person, you still may need some help getting started. For starters, you’re going to need the right pool supplies and cleaning products before you begin. Getting these beforehand will eliminate any running around later on. Not to mention you’ll have a chance to speak with one of the experts at your local pool store for more information about how to use the product with your pool.
If you think an algaecide caused the foam build-up in your pool, simply give it a few days. It will likely resolve itself and break down without any interference. To speed along the process, use your net to skim the foam from the surface.
Test the water using a test kit to ensure that the chemicals are properly balanced. Ensure that your pH level is between 7.4 and 7.6, while alkalinity should be between 100-150 ppm. If they are outside of these ranges, adjust the chemicals in your pool and balance the water.
If balancing the water doesn’t work, you can always resort to a good old pool shock. Add a chlorine or non-chlorine shock around dusk and allow your pool system to run overnight. If this doesn’t work, an anti-foam chemical should do the trick. Each anti-foam product is a little different, so be sure to review the instructions and speak with a specialist at your pool store to ensure it’s used correctly.
