Softer water, lower cost, and no chloramines are just a few of the benefits in going with a salt water pool. There are so many less variables involved in the upkeep of a salt water pool but there are still some steps you will need to maintain it’s stability. Along with regular chemical tests and clearing the pool of dirt and debris you should be aware of other contributing health factors. Below are the steps necessary and what to expect for salt water pool maintenance.
Salt Water Chlorination
Chlorinating a salt water pool is quite a bit different than your standard pool. A salt chlorinator or SWG utilizes various chemicals to create a sanitizing solution that interacts with your pool through the process of electrolysis. A common myth is that salt water pools do not use chlorine and that is not exactly true. The chemical compound for chlorine is arrived at through a different process which is noted to be healthier for your skin.
Salt Water Pool Maintenance Tools
Though you will not be in for the amount of work other pools might demand of you, you will still need some tools to perform responsible salt water pool maintenance. You should use a skimmer as always to remove harmful loose debris. Make sure you have a vacuum for the harder to skim dirt stuck to the bottom of your pool. Purchase a series of test strips to check the alkalinity, chlorination, and salt concentration of pool on a regular basis.
Salt Water Pool Maintenance Checklist
Design a checklist for yourself in order to prepare for monthly and yearly routine pool maintenance. This way you will not forget an important element of proper salt water pool preparation and upkeep. The list should definitely include winterizing your pool for Fall and Winter on a yearly basis. Monthly it should include testing for hard metals like copper, iron and magnesium. On a weekly basis your priority should be keeping the pool clean so it can enjoyed by you and your guests.
Cleaning Salt Water Pool Algae
As we explained, your salt water pool is still chlorinated like a normal pool, however it can operate much differently. Killing destructive algae for a normal pool includes a method called “shocking” which is replaced by a switch that comes with most salt water pool systems. What this switch does is sends a hyper chlorinating release into the pool to kill existing algae after you scrape it from the side of the pool wall. If this switch is not an option you will have to manually do this process in much the same way you shock a regular pool.
